Bradley Smith - An Independent Voice for County Commissioner District 1

Independent Candidate for County Commissioner District 1

I’m running to lower the tax burden, open up county government, and move McIntosh County in the right direction.

This is home. I believe county government should be practical, careful with your tax dollars, and easy for citizens to follow. We need steady leadership that listens, explains its decisions, and keeps the long-term future of McIntosh County in mind.

What this campaign is about

A practical approach to taxes, transparency, and growth.

I’m focused on three priorities: lowering the tax burden, making county government easy to understand and follow, and managing growth in a way that protects the character and affordability of our community.

Property taxes

Families and retirees should not be treated like an unlimited source of revenue. We need to spend carefully and look for more balanced ways to fund county services.

Open government

People should not have to dig through hard-to-find documents to understand what county government is doing. Meetings, budgets, and decisions should be easier to follow.

Responsible growth

Growth should be planned, not just allowed to happen. We need to address long-standing problems like the abandoned outlet mall and make sure development serves the people who live here.

Why affordability matters

McIntosh County cannot absorb repeated tax increases like wealthier counties can.

McIntosh County is older, has lower household income, and has more senior households than any of our neighbors. That matters because repeated tax increases land harder here, especially on retirees, working families, and people living on fixed incomes.

Median household income$57,000Lowest among listed neighbors.
Poverty rate23%Highest among listed neighbors.
Median age51.8Oldest in the comparison.
Households 65+45.1%Highest senior-household share.
State-owned land20.1%A heavier public-land burden.
We should govern McIntosh County with the people who actually live here in mind.

Before county government asks people to pay more, it should be clear about why, careful about how much, and honest about the tradeoffs.

Looking Glass

I built Looking Glass so taxpayers can see the numbers for themselves.

Looking Glass is a simple public dashboard for McIntosh County taxpayers. It brings budget, tax, assessment, and spending information into one place so residents can see what is happening without having to hunt through government documents.

A flat millage rate is not a tax freeze.

If assessments rise and the millage rate is not rolled back enough, taxpayers can still pay more. Looking Glass is meant to help show where the money comes from and where it goes.
